About Us

Supportive Parents is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity. We grew out of a University of London Institute of Education research project carried out in 1987. This was based in the Southmead Health District and involved parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the County of Avon Education Department, Social Services Department and the Southmead District Health Authority.

This co-operative project was aimed at helping the statutory authorities review and develop their services for children with special educational needs with particular regard to the implementation of the 1981 Education Act.

The outcome of the research project led one educational psychologist to say

Parents need to be informed. They need to be able to lobby for their child. They need information and the skills. For a group at large it’s helping individuals to fight their corner to become more confident and negotiate on equal terms.

Parents involved in the research project formed Supportive Parents in 1989 to provide information and support to parents of children with SEND.
