Support Group Tuesday 14th April 7 - 9 pm The Firs, Drove Road, Weston Super Mare, BS23 3NX

A workshop with Jenny Maxwell with resources from Michelle Garcia Winner 'Social Thinking' expert.

For our April Support Group meeting on Tuesday 14th we are pleased to welcome back Jenny Maxwell, from the North Somerset Vulnerable Learners Service. Jenny is an Educational Psychologist and takes the lead for the Enhanced Autism Team who work around our schools advising on and supporting pupils with Autistic Spectrum conditions. Jenny visited us last year and promised to return to talk to us about Michelle Garcia Winner, who developed the term 'Social Thinking' see link:  https://www.socialthinking.com/what-is-social-thinking

Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them - and how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions. Challenges are commonly experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorders, social communication disorder, Aspergers, ADHD, non verbal learning disability (NLD) and similar diagnoses, including children and adults experiencing social learning difficulties who have not received a diagnosis.

Michelle Garcia Winner is an American Speech and Language Therapist. She developed some brilliant ways of teaching 'social thinking' through her practical experience with school pupils, who, whatever their diagnosis or profile of needs, were just not getting their conversations and social activities with other people right. Michelle delivered a 3 day conference in Bristol last summer and the evening will be an opportunity to share some of the lovely ideas and resources that Michelle has developed. Michelle has a blog and if you are interested it is well worth having a look at that www.socialthinking.com

We hope you will join us, Jenny's aim is that hopefully everyone attending will go home with at least one nice visual or something they would like to try.
