Delivering support and aspiration for disabled young people

learning from pathfinder areas about how to deliver the special educational needs and disability reforms for 14-25 year olds. The guide click here sets out the learning from the local areas piloting the SEN and disability reforms. It aims to help all local areas get ready to implement the reforms over the next year and improve life chances for young people. Whilst the publication is aimed primarily at local authorities and their health partners, families may find it useful to read about what has been learnt in the pilot areas about improving life chances for young disabled people through the SEN reforms.

South Glos Support Group 19th Nov 7.30pm - 9pm Room 1, Supportive Education Unit, Brimsham Green Secondary School, Broad Lane, Yate BS37 7LB

As you may be aware the Government are planning to introduce sweeping reforms to the SEN system from September 2014. The changes mean that there will be a new SEN Code of Practice to provide guidance for professionals in how to make the system work. The Government are consulting on this draft Code until December 9th and we are using support group on Tuesday to support parents to send a response to the Government.

The new code is a very large document with a wide range of questions that the Government are asking, so in a 90 minute session session we are not going to be able to look at all of it!

We are planning to look at sections which may be of more immediate interest to parents. These are : Chapter 3 - A Family Centered System (This deals with involving families and young people in decision making, impartial information, advice and support and Parent Carer Forums) Chapter 6 - Early Years, Schools, colleges and other education providers (This chapter deals with how schools and other educational settings 0-25 will meet the needs of children with SEN) Chapter 7 - Assessments and Education, Health and Care Plans (This chapter explains how statutory assessments which may lead to Education, Health and Care Plans will be carried out)

You can read all of the consultation documents and the draft code at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/special-educational-needs-sen-code-of-practice-and-regulations

Please note the anti bullying workshop has been postponed.

Support Group 12th Nov 7-9pm The Firs Drove Road, WSM, BS23 3NX

Supportive Parents will be holding a support group meeting on Tuesday 12th November, 7.00 - 9.00 pm at The Firs Resource Centre 89a Drove Road,Weston-Super-Mare, BS23 3NX. to discuss and consult on the new draft Code of Practice for SEN. We would like to gather parents and carers views to supply feedback to this consultation.

On 4th October the government released a draft version of both the 0 to 25 Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice and regulations for consultation. These set out the detail of the proposed new SEN legal framework within the Children and Families Bill that is currently in Parliament. This consultation proposes the removal of School Action and School Action Plus, replacing SEN statements (for schools) and learning difficulty assessments (for young people in further education and training) with single 0 to 25 education, health and care plans.
